After a hard parliamentary battle that defeated his Partai Demokrat, President Yudhoyono has amazingly found a strategic advantage. With their parliamentary victory, Golkar found themselves with no strategy for the next rounds. Golkar is undecided between continuing the juggernaut against the government and holding on to their coalition privileges. It is not an easy position for Bakrie. His real motive was the elimination of the Ministry of Finance from office to prevent the unraveling of his illegal business practices. As SBY made it clear he is firm in defending Sri Mulyani, Bakrie has no recourse than try to regain the goodwill of the president. T

The euphoria for democracy and free media showed its power as a double-edged sword when they merged into an irresistible parliamentary force. The good news is that the defeat brought into sharp focus the dangerous elements in our nation. Abuse of democracy, Power of illegal money, media dictated by money. We can fix these problems, and when it is done we will have a new Indonesia, better than we have ever had.

Corruption was inside of the government, now the corrupt people are outside. Outside of the cabinet, but not outside of the political system. Many suspect elements are members of the parliament, and some officials who had been dismissed by Sri Mulyani have been selected to head important agencies such as the Audit Agency (BPK). When Sri Mulyani upheld the law on tax, capital markets and acquisitions, some fell victim to the rulings in favor of good governance. This has spawned a vendetta among the erstwhile victims of reform. That is the plain truth about the Bank Century debate.

Carbon emission abatement in Indonesia offers additionality at a scale not achievable in the rest of the world. Leaving her role as a major oil power, Indonesia will be a carbon credit superpower. This is the new destiny of Indonesia, and the start of a new career for SBY as world statesman, one who will be instrumental in saving the globe from climate change, not to mention as a peacemaker equipped with a keen understanding of Islam in the political world. The second SBY administration should be vastly different from the SBY-JK government. As Jusuf Kalla steps down from the Golkar stage in Riau, SBY is being helped onto the world stage by Indonesia’s heritage. But the requisite is a strong focused cabinet with advisors who are dedicated to make the SBY promises at the G-20 come true.

I am glad someone of note said it, so I do not have to display loss of patience. Megawati is on the way to lose her second presidential election with a pout as her only reaction. Jusuf Kalla was magnanimous in defeat, kudos to your Sir, but apparently switches back and forth to a protesting stance in loyalty to his staff. What a circus. Wiranto might come out of this as the only statesmanlike candidate with General Prabowo following him. He has been uncharacteristically quiet, for which we salute him

If he succeeds in accommodating political pressure groups, Indonesia may transgress political bickering and be ready to assume a new role in the world for the nation. SBY has the international vision to remake Indonesia into a big player in Asia and a voice in the world. Carrying the theme forward, non-political people who are concerned for the nation hope to see SBY use his second term to refresh Indonesia’s international role. Islam, democracy and modernity co-exists in Indonesia. Indonesia has the capital to be a moderate Muslim nation and now we also have the government.

Jakarta Bureau Chief Yusuke Takahashi intervewed Wimar Witoelar for the Japanese television network NHK. The following is a full transcript of the interview. Excerpt: 'If I had my way then I would like to have SBY devote himself to the future and assign the management of the country to the technocras. He has a very good team of technocrats already. He has Mr. Boediono, he has Sri Mulyani, he has Dr. Chatib Basri. A large number of proven technocrats, very clean, very expert. Also in other areas. SBY isn’t really a politician, he was a military man, but he could be a statesman. So I think his second term should be dedicated to the future. And that is mostly in re-establishing Indonesia’s presence in the world. I believe very strongly that international relations are very important to the nation’s future because it is a global world.'

Wimar on Metro TV: We hope he will start this second term with a flying start, with a good cabinet. Appointing people like Boediono and Sri Mulyani, people who have impeccable records, and leave the politicking to politicians. If he succeeds in doing that, then Indonesia will soon transgress its domestic problems and enter the international scene. Indonesia is poised to take an international step. In 2014 Indonesia should be a big player in Asia and a major player in the world.

Nothing has been evident in the polls that the debates had any impact on voter preferences. Since the presidential tickets were announced, the three candidates stayed in the same relative positions throughout the campaign. The front runner weakened slightly over time and the third place candidate strengthened a bit while the middle candidate stayed in the middle. Independent political analyst Hayat Mansur attributes this stable constellation to the captive nature of each candidate's constituency. Mansur adds that campaign issues have nothing to do with the way traditional constituencies vote.

Outside of the center people are voting on emotional sound bites, not even personality, because people have no idea of the true personalities. The candidates are appealing in some cases to the emotions of the public and in only one case to rational explanations of policies and challenges.

The real story is not in the quality the debate, but the fact that the debate took place at all. Eleven years ago it would have been a Star Trek-like fantasy that presidential candidates would someday engage in open debate on national television. In fact, presidential elections were non-existent in all of Indonesia’s history prior to 1999. We never had more than one single candidate for the office.

Wimar says, "Team Kalla has very little chance. The Golkar party is factionalised and a much reduced version of its old self. But like in football, you cannot call the score until the game is over. People of course are concerned about Wiranto but as a political entity, he should not be regarded as a serious threat." Read ›
